Five Storey Fire in Wellington ■Wellington, This Day.
A five broke out at 4 o’clock this morning; on the t ip floor of Jacob Joseph’s five storey warehouse on Lambton Quav, of which the ground floor is occupied by the Wairarapa Farmers’ Co-operative Association, two next floors by the Government (Labour Department, Valuation and Census Offices and Official Assignee) and Conciliation Hoard rooms and top floors by W. F. Cas, merchandise, chiefly chaff and the like. The two top flats were gutted, but the damage m the lower portions of the building is confined ;o that by water.
Supreme Court Sittings.
Wellington, This Day.
At the Supreme Court yesterday morning, Alfred Hornby was sentenced to twelve months’ imprisonment for receiving stolen watches. The Chief Justice stated that it was his opinion fhat the prisoner was cither one of the burglars who had broken into Laery and Co’s or an accomplice.
Fire in Wellington. A building at Petone, owned by G. T. Louden and occupied by Odlin, confectioner, was destroyed by fire last night. Insurance on the building was £2OO in the Alliance and on the furniture £IOO in the North Queensland. The Brigade smartly saved the adjoining buildings, both sides of which had taken tire.
Charge of Murder. Donedin, This Day.
The hearing of the charge against Elizabeth Hiscock, of having murdered her male child, was commenced at the Police Court. The Crown prosecutor outlined the evidence, which would show that accused admitted to more than one woman that she had dropped a parcel in Heriot Row containing the body of a child. It was true that with the exception of Mrs Brown, sister of the accused, all
the women were of the unfortunate class, but it did not follow that they would give false testimony. Accused was remanded till Wednesday. Education Board Difficulty. New Plymouth, This Day.In consequence of the Education Board deciding to place the town school committee on the same footing as regards capitation as the country committees, the town committee to-night decided to give notice to the cleaners of the schools to dispense with their services, thus throwing the onus of cleaning the schools on the board. The town committee has been receiving 7s per head less 5 per cent, the country committees 4s 63. Trades and Labor Disputes.
Wellington, August 19. The Conciliation Board was to-day engaged hearing the dispute in the furniture trades, employers being cited from Wanganui, Napier, and all parts of the industrial district. When the board rose an agreement was arrived at on most points of the dispute, except in regard to apprentices, some country employers wanting two to three journeymen and the unionists holding out for one to three. The farriers and blacksmiths have filed a dispute with the employers for reference to the Conciliation Board.
