During the last eleven months .Mr T. 'P. Smith the well-known Dunedin, mining engineer has put down 606 net of shafting and 956 feet of bores «a the West Coast. Out of 15 claims prosp acted by him only four were found good, i .brae from various causes, were doubtful, and eight were condemned. This is a fort able illustration of the imperative necessity' for thorough prospecting and in the hgh t of figures such as these the proportion i of working dredges that are p roving pay able must be considered very satisfactory.
