SUICIDE IN WELLINGTON.

An Ex-Wardef Shoots Himself.

At about 4.15 yesterday afternoon, a man named Charles Clement o‘Bricn walked into the Star and Garter Hotel, at the top of Cuha-strcet, and asked for a glass of whisky. It was given to him by Miss Minogue, daughter of the proprietress. Ho did net pay, but, after standing for a short time in the bar, apparently in an absent-minded state, asked for a private room, which the young lady stated was not obtainable, Bhe offered him the use of the couch in the passage. O'Brien walked through the dining-room and thence to the commcrcial-room, tho door of which he closed.

Though he was quite sober, Miss Minogue had noted his peculiar manner, and wont to the commercial room, where she found him lying on the couch, and expressed her disappro al of his ahut'ing himself in. hho came away, leaving the door open, and had only gone a few yards when she heard a shot. O’Brien must have risen up, approached the doorway, and shot hims .If, for the body fell through the open door and into the passage.

The police were sent for, and Constable Williams arrived. It was found that the deed had been done with a five-ebainbered revolver, apparently new, which had four chambers still loaded. ,The bullet had entered the centre of the forehead and passed through the brain d»aili bring instaiUai.eous. u ad n ’ •*»;* pearance of a heavy drinker, though tie is said to have been drinking, The shm of 2d was found in his possession. _ Tho body was taken to the morgue. On it was also found an unsigned note, addressed, it is understood-, to “ Mrs 0. O’ Br en ” to 'h* effect that In- had be'ter die, and in - tioning some family trouble.

Deceased was formerly a ward- r Lyttelton Gaol, and had been out of 'ha service for about two years. He had been for some time in Wellington, lodging at various places. Yesterday afternoon, be called at one of bis former lodging-houses, and obtained pen and paper, with which the note was probably written. It is stated that; he leaves throe children by a first wife, also a second wife and two children, the latter resident in Lyttelton. He was not in the hotel more than live minutes, and tho suicide appears to have been cool and resolute. Deceased was about 46 years of age.

SANDER & SONS’ EUCALYPTI EX-TRACT-—Under the distinguished patronage of His Majesty the King of Italy, as per com munication made by tho Minister forfForeign Affairs, through the Consul-General or Italy at Melbourne, March 14, 1878. Awarded diploma at the Amsterdam Exhibition, 1883Acknowledged by Mdical Clinics and Universities all over the Globe. There are imitations of Eucalypti Extract in tho market, products of simple distillation, forming crude, resinous oils. In order that these crude oils may not be taken for our pursolatile Eucalypti Extract, which is recognise by tho Medical Division of tho Prussian Goernment to be of perfectly pure origin, as per. nformation forwarded to us thiough the Consul at Melbourne, March 2, IS7B, we vtate: —

It is proved by tests made by the Medical Clinics of the Universities of Bonn and G/iefswald (Prussia), and reported toby Dr Schultz Professor of Pharmacology at Bonn, and Professor Dr Mossier, Director of the Medical Clines at Griefswaid, that only products that are saturated with oxygen and freed of acids resinous and other substances adherent to primary distillation, will develop the sanative qualities proper to the plant. All crude oils or so-called Eucalypti Extracts, are to be classed according to the named authorii )S, among the turpentines, which are abandoned long since as an internal medicament. T 1 -sc crude oil, or so-called Eucalypti Extracts, are discernible :

1. By their deficiency in pungent oa > (which our product, the only genuine Eusa lypei Extract, develops moat freely throi’gn ts surplus oxygen.) 2. By their alcoholic, thin, and mobile appearance, being reduced to specific density through the presence of acids. 3. By their taste, the result of contract ing tendency of resins and tanats. if these crude oils, or so-called Eucalypti Extracts, are applied by mistake in ca-ns of croup, bronchitis, diptheria, internal inflammation, dysentry, etc.,' the consequences are most appalling. For safety’s sake ask always or Sander and Sons’ Eucalypti Extract.— Sandhurst, Victoria, Australia. —SANDER & SONS.
