The visitors knew very Util* about the game, and were overrun in every department during the greater part of the contest. The home team ■cored 14 points during the first Spell, Marlborough’s score at that stage being nil. Playing with a strong wind behind them in the second spell the visitors made gome good rushes, from which Sowman scored two tries, but failed to convert either. For Wellington McLachlan kicked a goal from a mark, bringing the score to eighteen. The visitors played pluekily under disheartening circumstances and defended their line very well in the, latter part of the game. Canterbury y. Southland. Invercargill, August 14. Just as the match started a stiff southerly breeze came up, and Southland winning the toss, played with it. There was no scorn in the first spoil. The style of play adopted by the visitors was disappointing and vot d antiquated. As the plav went the sides were well matched up to last seven minutes, the score thou standing 4 to 3. A goal was kicked from 'a mark by Harper to a penalty goal by Jacobs Then after successfu.ly staving off several attacks near their line,. the visitors assumed the offensive, and Phillips , rv and when Harper converted their victory was assured. During the {IS minute Bush scored,.his try being the
finest piece of play of the match, and to Harper, who started a rush in midfield belongs the credit. Two thousand were present, but it is doubtful if a similar game would attract 500 to-morrow. Canterbury frequently were penalled for offside, but that was no deterrent, two of the forwards psrsistently infringing, and free kicks to Southland did not compensate for the infringements.
