THE IMPERIAL PARLIAMENT.
Pacific Cable Bill Passed.
[PEK PRESS ASSOCIATION —COPYRIGHT.]
London, August 14 In the House of Commons M. O’Mara’s amendment on the Pacific Cable Bill limiting the Motherland’s borrowing to fire eighteenths, was negatived by 154 to 64, as was also the attempt t > give the Government control on v the board, including the fixing of future rates.
The Nationalists urged that the scheme benefited the Colonies alone, that the cable was constructed by British and Irish capital ought not to be subject to colonial control. Moreover the rates were likely to bo cut regardless of comi. mercial considerations.
Mr. Austin Chamberlain’s proposals showed the true proportions of the responsibility. The Bill passed without amendment and was read a third time.
