STATE COAL MINES.
It may be taken for granted that the State coal mine is to be started on the West Coast of the Middle Island—-at least that is the general impression. Such being the case the choice naturally enough is narrowed down to two localities—Greymouth and Westport. Upon these two localities a special commission will report. Regarding such Board our Parliamentary correspondent this forenoon telegraphs :
“ Mr. Jameson, formerly manager of the Westport Coal Company at Westport, is to be associated with Messrs. Gordon, Hayes and Mackay in the selection of a suitable site for a State coal mine. The West Coast of the South Island will be immediately visiteJ, and the Commissioners leave by the Mapourika to-day to commence their duties.'” We trust that this district will receive that consideration which it deserves, and hope that the Mayor along with other prominent public men will see that the advantages possessed by this locality are properly represented. Doubtless, our Westport neighbours will take good care to set forth the merits of their district, and although the gentlemen composing the Commission are well acquainted with both places, yet we all know that “ a word in season ” very often has good effect.
