[PER PRESS ASSOCIATION] Labor Legislation. Melbourne, August 9. The Senate adopted a resolution to the effect that it is expedient the Commonwealth Parliament should accept powers to make laws in Australia as to wages, hours, and the conditions of labour. In the House of Representatives Mr Barton, in replying to criticisms prior to the Defence Bill being read a second time, said that he would not attempt, and had no desire to do anything to cause the same category as Continental conscription. He wanted to show the world what they could do in case of need by preserving by the principle of the Bill that it was the duty of every man to. come forward to serve his country in the hour of danger. Missionary Schooner Wrecked. Sydney, This Day. The Secretary of the London Missionary Society received a telegram that the Society’s schooner Olive Branch was totally wrecked on a reef at Kwato Island, New Guinea. All hands were saved. There are no details. Strike of Ironworkers. The arbitrator in connection with the late strike in the iron trade awarded the ironworkers’ assistants 6s 6d per day. The assistants struck for 7s and the masters offered 6s.
