Greymouth Evening Star. AND BRUNNERTON ADVOCATE. MONDAY, AUGUST 5, 1901. NOTES AND COMMENTS.
The warship Mildura is now on her way from Sydney, to continue the survey of the New Zealand coasts, which was commenced by H.M.S. Penguin. The work is being undertaken as the result of representations made by the Premier to the Imperial Government in January, 1900. Mr. Seddon stated that some portions of the coast had never been properly surveyed, while in other cases the coasts or bars had changed, and the existing charts were misleading. The original survey of the coasts, which was only a partial one, was carried out by H.M.S. Archeron and Pandora between 1849 and 1855. The programme for the present survey includes the North Island coasts from Cape Kidnappers to Cape Palliser, from Portland Island to East Cape, the Bay of Plenty, a small portion off Coromandel Harbor and the West
Coast from Capo Maria van Diemen to to Manukau. The portions of the South Island to be surveyed are from Cascade Point to Farewell Spit, a small portion of the coast on each side of the French Pass, the Antipodes and Bounty Islands. The colony is to pay half the cost of the survey. The full cost of a single ship and staff varies, according to size, from £IO,OOO to £15,000 per annum.
The railway traffic for the monthly period ending 22nd June, 1901, shows a phenomenal increase in comparison with the corresponding period of last year, This is disclosed by the following table, which has been placed at the disposal of the New Zealand Times, showing the actual increases in passengers carried and amounts derived ; Kawakawa, 119 passengers, £9 2s lid; Whangaroi, 195, £63 18s Id; Kaihu. 322, £22 18s 4d: Auckland, 67,947, £6,215 2s lid; Wanganui, 19,349, £2,235 6s Sd ; Wellington, 38,490, £3,448 8s 3d ; Christchurch, 48,812, £2,581 2s 5d ; Dunedin, 17,601, £1,405 6s sd; Invercargill, 10 913, £2,277 3s lOd ; Westland, 6,962, £8 18s 9d ; Westport, 603, 7s 2d ; Nelson, 427, £2l 13s Id; Picton, 1,492, £BO 13s 4d; total increase of passengers carried, 214,994 (over a quarter of the total population of the colony) ; total increase of fares, £18,370 12s 2d. The comparative smallness of the increase in taking's in comparison with the increase in passengers is accounted for by the reductions made in the fares since last year.
