She was afterwards found face downwards in a shallow stream, and as she was subject to fits it was supposed she had accidentally drowned. After Douglas’ conviction suspicion was aroused and the body exhumed, but nothing was found except a small bruise on the nead which medical evidence went to show occurred after death occurred. Douglas was formally charged with murder and remanded. Robert Douglas was charged at the Magistrate’s Court to-day with the murder of Susannah Pain at Mikimiki on the 22nd October 1898, and was remanded without the case being gone into until Friday next,
