Melbourne, August 2. In the Senate a discussion has taken sdace5 dace as to what qualifications the High commissioners in London should possess. Government, hold that a man of good social standing gifted with a. diplomatic mind should be selected rather than one well up in commercial and produce knowledge, ■ In the Senate Mr Keating moved that Government should immediately acquire the Bass Strait cable, which could be obtained for £70,000, the original cost. The Postmaster-General deprecated forcing the hand of the Government. The debate was adjourned.
