BLOCH, THE RUSSIAN BANKER.
M. Bloch, the Russian banker, who has been much talked about of late in connection with his great book on war, was hall a century ago a humble pedlar, working hard, early and late, and reading books and learning to write in the few spare hours that came his way. At 25 ho won a prize of £2OOO in a lottery, and settled down to a course of study in Berlin. Returning to Warsaw he obtained a post in a bank, married a banker’s rich daughter, and is now one of the best known men in Russia, It was his great book, as all the world knows, which did so much to impress the Czar with a deep terror of war.
