The Referendum Bill. Wellington, July SO. Barely, if ever, has a Government measure received such unanimously severe handing at the hands of the Legislative Councillors as has been extended to the Eeferendum Bill, the debate on which is unconcluded. Not a single speaker so far has supported the Minister of Education’s motion for the second reading of the measure, while such staunch supporters of the Government policy as the Hons. P. Arkwright, C. Lomsson, T. Kelly, J. M. Toomey, E, Beeves, Lee Smith and Bigg spoke in condemnation of it. The probabilities are that the Bill will receive the happy despatch by the carrying of Mr Arkwright’s amendment that it bo read a second time that day six months. County’s Bill. Mr M‘Nab, nominated by the Premier, and Mr W, Fraser, proposed by Mr Pirani, were the candidates for the chairmanship of the committee of country members to whom the Local Government Bill has been referred and j&Q Government nominee secured the coveted honor.
