MARLBOROUGH RAILWAY LEAGUE.
[Pee Pbess Association.]-
Wellington, July 30. A deputation representing the Mad* borough Railway and Land League, waited upon Hons Seddon, Ward, Halt Jones and Duncan to-night to urge the prosecution of the Blenheim-Waipara line and the necessity of closer settle* ment on the land. It was recognised that the line could not be pushed on while the Flaxbourne estate was looked up and the deputations asked that Government would take prompt steps to eo» quire the estate and so facilitate the construction of the line, Mr Beddon, In replying said an answer to the deputation could not be given off hand. To take possession of such a large estate as Flax.- " bourne opened up a large question of finance. They must consider what was to
be the limit of the expenditure of the borrowed money for public works. AJrsady one and a half millions were required; for line improvements half a million, and a like amount for land purchases. With that expenditure in view it was just about time that the position was fairly faced. To announce a borrowing policy at tba present time would be prejudicial to .the colony’s finances.
