OUR POPULATION.
The Registrar-General’s returns of the last census are sufficiently compiled to enable us to glean a good deal, of interesting information therefrom. Taking the largest boroughs in the colony we have the following figures:—
But the inclusion of their suburbs places the position of the five chief towns as fol’ows Greater Auckland ... 67,232 Greater Christchurch... 57,037 Greater Duncdift ... 52,398 Greater Wellington ... 49,292 Greater Invercargill ... 10,629 In the other cases we do not recognise suburbs in dealing with figures affecting the population. The returns will show marvellous commercial advancement and great prosperity, but the increase in population is by no means what should have boon expected under such favorable conditions, and there is reason to fear that the natural increase of population in this colony is one of the problems that may ere long affect our national wellbeing.
Wellington ... 43,586 Auckland ... 34,219 Dunedin ... ... 24,886 Christchurch ... ... 17,537 Napier ... 8,775 Wanganui ... 7,331 Nelson ... 7.009 Palmerston North ... 6,514 Timaru ... 6,421 Invercargill ... 6,213
