VOLUNTEER FIRE BRIGADE BALL.

Tlie annual Fire Brigade Ball was held last night in the Opera House and was a huge success, between 70 and 80 couples occupying the floor. The hall was it picture, being tastefully decorated with ferns and native shrubs and bunting, blending together, presenting a very tasteful appearance, and reflecting great credit upon the members who undertook this portion of the arrangements. The music was one of the treats of the evening, and again Messrs Ashton and Bennington are stamped as first-class musicians. The fancy dresses were unique in design and reflected great credit upon those dancers that appeared in such. Secretary Walton, ably assisted by the whole of the Brigade members, worked hard to make the function a success, and it is needless to say their united efforts were appreciated. The Kumara Brigade was well represented, the members expressing themselves warmly in regard to the hospitality extended to them. All available space in the hall was occupied by spectators who seemed to thoroughly enjoy the prone, dings and wishes were expressed that social reunions hindered to the Brigade Ball were not more frequent. Our Brigade are to be congratulated upon their management in carrying out a ball with such an enjoyable history. On Monday evening a welcome will be tendered te Trooper Henry Brown at the Opera House, he being for some years a member of the Volunteer Fire Brigade prior to his departure for South Africa. The welcome will take the form of a ball and no doubt lots will grasp this opportunitj'of welcoming ‘‘Henry” who like many others staked his life for the Empire and came out of the ordeal covered with glory.
