Kate Livingstone, a cousin of the late missionary and African explorer, has her age set forth in the census papers as 105. She is known as the Mull centenarian. A still more advanced age has been attained by Kate Stewart, of Gobsealach, Ardnamurchan, the figure in her case being 108. A statue of Cupid, dating from the Roman period, has been discovered near the village of Montegent, in the Canton of Fribourg, Switzerland. The remnants of a Roman wall and some pottery were also discovered.
The reason given for the substitution of the drum for the trumpet in the Italian army is that in the these days of short service a young soldier learns to march to the drum far sooner than to the trumpet. Again, it is found that trumpeters are very subject to pulmonary affections
The absurd craze for titles, notable among Americans, has recently developed into giving such names as "earl," "duke" '•Lord," "marquis," etc., to their offspring This is certainly a democratic distribution of rank as far as appearances go. It is one, moreover, which may—sooner or ater —cause.a great deal of confusion.
