Evidently Suicide. Dannevirkb, This Day. B, H. Solomon, stationer and tobacconist, was found dead in bis saloon. He bad apparently committed suicide, as the gas was turned on and the key removed from the burner. All the crevices by which gas might escape were blocked. The Grand Hotel Fire. Auckland, This Day. The girl Minns was before the Police Court to-day charged with murder and remanded. Bail in two sureties of £SOO each was allowed.
Maori Assault Case. Wellington This Day. Pone Aroma Mohi was sentenced to twelve months imprisonmmt for assault at Otaki, The Chief Justice remarked however that the case was one which might well be investigated by the Executive Council. Wilford, counsel for defence intends petitioning to that end.
Wounded Troopers. Government has received advice that Trooper George Geddes, of Waihao, near Timaru was severely wounded at Lake Christie and Trooper W. Batson of Palmerston North was severely wounded on the Borderland, Both belong to the Sixth Contingent.
Importation of Opium. -ffho Premier in answer to Mr Guinness promised to re-introduce this session the bill prohibiting importation of opium to the Colony. A threatening Letter. CnmsTCHUiicn, This Day. A youcg man named Dunn pleaded guilty to sending a letter to a girl who had jilted him, threatening to blow her brains out. He said he had not meant it seriously, but the Magistrate sent him to the Supreme Court for esntence. Fireworks’ Explosion. Invbecaegill, This Day. At the inquest into the explosion of the rocket, the carpenter, who made the rocket, deposed that Captain McGilvray wanted him to bore a two-inch hole through the tail; but he had not a proper augur, and at the Captain’s suggestion he made a separe socket instead. Gave no one permission to discharge the fireworks,
Building and Investment Society. Wellington, July 16. The Wellington Building and Investment Company has declared a dividend of nine per cent for the year. The Governor’s Movements. The Governor arrived from the south in the Tutaaekai this morning and goes on to the north, via West Coast, to-night. Treatment of Consumptives. The Wellington Hospital Trustees have decided to co-operate with other Hospital Boards and Boards of Health in urging the Government to erect suitable buildings in various centres for the treatment of consumptives.
