A treat may be expected at Totara Flat on Tuesday evening next and at the Opera House on Wednesday, 21th instant, when his Lordship Bishop Grimes will deliver an illustrated lecture on the “ Marvels of Venice, and Disentombed Pompeii.” The Bishop is at all times an eloquent speaker and with such a subject at his command and a personal acquaintance with the buried cities, it will be a treat of no ordinary nature that is in store for the residents of Greymouth and district.

At a mooting held in the Town Hall yesterday, a committee consisting of the Mayor, Messrs Steer, Bignoll, Gicscking and M'Lean, were appointed to make arrangements for a smoke concert, to be held in the Opera House in honour of the returned troopers. Messrs Lord, Sheedy and Bignell were appointed a committee to look after the catering. It was resolved that the volunteers, bands and local bodies be asked toassist in making the function successful.

A summoned meeting of the Foresters Lodge was held last evening at the Lodge Room, Gilmer Hotel, when the installation of officers took place, and the following brethcru were installed :—C.ll. Bro. T. Brown ; S.C.R, Bro. Schnert; S.W, Bro. 11. Nelson ; J.W. Bro. W. Murray ; S.B. Bro. J. Brisbane ; JB. Bro. R, Boddy ; E.S. Bro. T. Clark. The balance sheet and report submitted to the meeting showed the flourishing position the Court enjoys. It was decided that the Court make an effort to get its surplus sums let out on freehold security. One member was initiated with the usual formality. This Lodge is a magnificent Order and the benefits it offers should not be lost sight of by the young men in and around Greymouth, and if they give but one thought to their future welfare the ranks of the Court will increase and their own position become sounder. A meeting o' the Star Football Clnb was held last evening at the Club Room, about thirty members being present. After the minutes of the last meeting were read and adopted, the Secretary showed the club to bo in a good financial position. The election of officers to fill the places of those members who had left the district was then proceeded with, when Mr 0. MTherson was elected Captain, Mr A. White vice-Captain, and Messrs F. The frame of the new Government schooner Countess of Hanfurly, which is to be employed in the Islands trade, is made of pohutukawa and puriti covered with heart of kauri planking, and protected by copper sheeting from keel tr water-line. The length of the vessel oveallis 115 ft, length on the water-line 101 ft, beam 25ft, and her hold is lift 6in deep. She is fitted with an 85-horse-power four cylinder Union oil engine, each cylinder being independent of the others, so that the engine can be run on two, three or four cylinders at will, and the governor can be regulated to run from 250 devolutions down to 100. Six knots will be the average speed generated by the engine. The floor space is Bft 6in by 4ft. Lieut-enant-Colonel Gudgeon, British Resident at Raratonga, has been provided with a special cabin amidships, accomoda'.ion for a few passengers being provided in the same position. The hold is capable of holding something like 275 tons of cargo
