THE RETURNING CONTINGENTS.
[pes pbess association.] Dunedin, July 10. The Troopship Ta,','us, with the member 3 of tho Fourth and Fitth Contingents returning from South Africa arrived outside tho Heads at 2 p m and anchored. Tde [Government steamer Tutanekai went alongside Dr Hodges, Health Officer, informed the Captain of the Tagus, that the vessel would bo boarded and inspected, and if all was well admitted to pratique to-morrow afternoon. It is intended to tranship the Otago and Southland men to the Tutanekai and Te Anau and take them down to the Bluff. It was ascartained that Trooper •I. Kendall, of Hokianga, died this morning. His death is believed to be due to peritonitis. The list of those on board will not be available till to-morrow.
His Excellency the Governor, the Hon C. H, Mills, Messrs Hannan and McNab M. H. It's, came up to Danedin this afternoon.
The Tagus is expected to be released, from quarantine about 2.30 to-morrow. Gunner A. Kendall, of the Fifth Con. tingent, died last night (not this morning) He will be buried with military honors to-morrow afternoon at Port Chalmers. A wreath will be sent down from the Government, Col. Penton and tho New Zealand forces. The whole of the troops on board the Tagus, with the exception possibly of five or six who are invalids, will be sent to the Bluff in the Tutanekai and Te Anau, not Otago and Southland as first stated.
Tnvbrcabgill, July 10. The weather is slowly clearing and the glass is going up. The snow has again melted and the prospects are reasonable for a good day on Friday for the demonstration. The billeting is practically full. 630 are provided for. The arrival of the Tagus at Port Chalmers removed the element of uncertainty that hampered the local committees. The contingents will probably leave there in the Te Anau and Tutanekai to-morrow night for the Bluff, arriving here at 11.30 on Friday.
