Tuesday, July 9th.

The Council resumod its sitting yes' terday forenoon.

The Engineer reported on the road to the New River dredge. He stated that the Council had only given one-third of cost and in some instances nothing. Other companies had done like work themselves. llesovled that conditional on the Company giving £2O towards the work, the Council expend £2O.

Resolved that the Government be asked to grant £3OO for various works throughout the County. The Engineer reported similarly on the Aldinga Company's application. Resolved that the Secretary be asked to state where the pontoons are to be built so as to enable the Council to see what length of road is needed.

On Mrs Pothn's application, the Engineer reported that by Public Works Act of 1894 owners of property had to clear their land of gorse. Resolved that the Council can give no assistance in the matter.

On T. Paymen's application, the Engineer reported that £3 would put road in repair. No action taken. The engineer reported that the track from Camerons to Marsden No. 1 pontoons was only a bush track and the cost of a foot track would be considered. Keferred to the engineer with power, if necessary, to expend £lO. On Mr. Galway's application he reported that Mr. Gal n-ay was a very good contractor, and traffic had increased during the peiiod. Received.

Cr. Larkin moved that the contractor get £lO as a consideration for extra work done through non-conipliance of bye-laws relating to narrow tyres. Seconded by Cr Ryall. Carried.

In regard to the deputation from Blackball, Cr Hargraves moved that the Engineer report and examine the ferry over river between Ngahcre and Blackball and in the event of it being defective he be instructed to put in thorough repair. Seconded by Cr. M'Carthy and carried.

Cr. Hargreaves moved that the "Ferry" the taking across of passengers from bank to bank and that the Council endorse' the action of the Chairman in the matter. Cr. Marshall seconded. Carried.

In regard to the culverts, Cr. Hargreaves moved that the culverts be enlarged. Cr. Marshall seconded. Carried.

Cr. Hargreaves moved that the timber in the Blackball Cemetery be cut down and a drain cut through centre of cemetery, and cemetery laid off in plots. After these works are completed, the cemetery be handed over to the Trustees. Cr. Harris seconded. Carried.

Cr. Hargreaves moved that Government be asked to grant a subsidy of £ for £ for street improvements at Blackball, and that Mr Gibbs be reminded of his offer. Cr. Marshall seconded. Carried,

Petition from residents of Cobden asking the Council to let Engineer report on roads and footpaths at Cobden and have same put in passable state of repairs.

Cr. Ryall moved that the petition be received and be laid on the table till next meeting. Seconded by Cr. Harris. Carried.

Resolved that application be made to Government for £3OO for above works. • Cr Larkin moved that the Council obtain outside opinion in regard to rates of the Midland Railway.—Carried. Cr. Marshall said that two companies at Orwell Creek would guarantee a telephone line, but the Government would not accept it. A private individual or the Council would have to guarantee the amount. He moved that Mr Erickson be [informed that the Government will not accept the Company's guarantee, and that he had better see the residents. Carried.

Resolved that the Council doth by this resolution convey to Sir J. Ward its sincere congratulations on the wellearned honor conferred on him by His Royal Highness the Duke of Cornwall and York for the faithful services rendered by him to the democracy of New Zealand, and expresses the hope that he will in the future, as in the past, continue to merit|the respect and confidence of the people.
