The worn-out uniforms of the British Army, when sold, bring back into the War Office treasury close upon £30,000 a year. The Canterbury Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals are asking the Canterbury M.H.R’s to support the society’s appeal tn the Government for a £ for £ subsidy. During the Royal visit in Wellington 16,110 passengers were carried over the Government railway, crossing the Rimutaka incline, and 23,160 passengers to and from Wellington on submarine lines. Records of the Irish Emigrant Society show that 25,182 personV entered at the port of New York as immigrants in 1900. This is an increase of 2,137 over the preceding year. There were 11677 males and 13,455 females, who brought 373,670 dollars,

News by the mail states that ex-Presi-dent Pretorius died at Potchefstroom on the 19th of May, after two days’ illness, at the age of eighty-three. His remains were followed to the grave by over a thousand townspeople and refugees. When Prince Alexander of Teck was at Potchefstroom, coresident Pretorius called upon the Prince and promised that he would work for He had no sympathy with the late administration of the Transvaal.
