OUR KUMARA LETTER.

(OUB OWN OOBHESPONDBNT.)

A painful and fatal accident happened to a little girl, aged nine years, a daughter of Mr Edward Bordinor, of Kumara Railway Junction, on Sunday last. It appears that the child was lifting a kettle from the fire, when her dross caught and was quickly aflame. Bushing out into the open she ran towards the mill, where the fire was quickly extinguished, but not before the child had sustained such terrible injuries that she died at six o’clock on Monday morning. The sincorest sympathy is felt for the parents in their sad bereavement.

Owing to the non-arrival of some of the material, the repairs to the Junction Dredge are not yot complstsd, And {i start will SCSVGcIy be made this week.

One of the chief social events of the season in Kumara is the Fire Brigade Fancy Dress Ball. It is set down for July 26th, and, judging from all one hears and sees, it promises this year to eclipse, not only in point of attendance, but in uniqueness and variety of costumes, all former events of a similar nature. This is as it should be, for surely no better argument could be advanced in its favor than to say it is in aid of the Fire Brigade, an institution that merits our best support.

To-night at the Town Hall the usual fortnightly meeting of the Literary and Debating Society takes place. The busi-

nessis a lecture by the Eey J. S. Thompson on “ Carlyle." Seeing that the lecturer has a first-class reputation, we may expect a full attendance.

The return of 15ozs for 140 hours from the Greenstone Creek is a distinct improvement. This dredge was a good deal delayed by want of fuel,' and also by displacing the top tumbler. There is a report that the Greenstone Three Milo got 18oz3 for the week, but up to the time of writing I have been unable to verify it.

Bishop Grimes will arrive in Kumara on the 27th instant, not the 24th as previously reported.
