Five hundred thousand persons in Great Britain pay carriage license. There are 15 private carriages to every thousand people. All buildings belonging ta the Chinese Emperor are yellow, and it is a capita! offence for any private person to use that colour.
The area of China and her dependent territories is 4,468,750 square miles—more than one-twelfth of the land surface of the globe. The President of the New Zealand Institute of Journalists has written to the Hon. Sir Joseph Ward, E.C.M.G. thanking him and the Government generally for the courtesy and kindness extended to the English journalists who visited the colony for the purpose of reporting the Royal tour. In the letter he writes ; “ That the colony will bo benefited in the future by being brought prominentely before the readers of the great English journals I think goes without saying. It is stated that on Thursday before the Christchurch tragedy, a couple of days before the commission of the tragedy, Mac Lean went over to the house of Mr George Martin, whose little son was murdered, and used a grindstone there to sharpen a tomahawk. While grinding it he asked two of the brothers of the murdered child to go with him and cut some scrub. The eldest son (a smart looking little fellow of eleven) replied that he was not going with a man to let him kill him.
The Camberwell Guardians, London, have passed a resolution giving it as their opinion that compulsory vaccination is a dire failure, and protesting against the enormously increased expenditure in respect of public vaccinations. The Guardians have also pledged themselves to take immediate steps to bring about the abolition of compulsory vaccination.
Tho Auckland Harbor Board have accepted a tender of £4,91)5 for the construction of Admiralty House, though Admiral Beaumont wrote declining to lay tho foundation stone, and saying that he did not believe tho Lords of the Admiralty would approve. The inference is that the later prefer that the Admiral should remain aboard his own ship when in port. Tho report of tho annual cost of the Chamber of Deputies of Franco shows that French representatives are not satisfied with hot and cold wafer, soap, and towels for their toilet, like the members of the House of Commons in this country. Tho year’s bill for eau-de-cologne amounts to over 1,500 fr, and other toilet appliances cost yearly about the same amount. —‘Good Words.’

The Wellington correspondent of the Hawke’s Bay Herald states that Mr Ashton Kayo, Hansard reporter, has received an appointment on tho Now South Wales Parliamentary Hansard staff. Chinese military officers obtain their positions by a study of sacred writings of Confucius. No other knowledge is necessary.

A remarkable instance of long service by churchwardens comes from Chatburn, in the Kibble Valley. Tho vestry meeting was held at tho parish church there, when Me Lawrence Robinson was appointed vicar’s warden for the fifehieth time, while Mr William Wheeler was selected as people’s warden, this being his fortieth year of office. It is stated that Sir Thomas Lipton is trying to organise the Australian wine with a view to pressing the colonial wines on tho British public, as he did tho Ceylon teas.
A curiously addressed letter bat been received by the Bank of KV.v South Wa'es, Sydney. A person in Swilzerland, wrote to the bank to make some inquiries. His knowledge of English was evidently limited, and he appears to have copied as address an advertisement in some country newspaper. The envelope read as follows Messieurs Lost Ga'.ah Parrot, Bank of New South Wales, Reward New South Wales. ” This was endorsed by tho postal officials, “ Try Bank N. S. W., Sydney, ” and duly reached its destination.
The Attorney-General of Queensland, in the course of his remarks at a farewell dinner to the Governor of that colony, said that the Government did not expect Lord Lamingion’s successor to be less than a British nobleman, and stated that the Government did not intend to reduce the sum placed on the estimates for Government House,
The extreme Socialists in Dunedin are in a somewhat parlous state. At the annual meeting of the Fabian Society there were only three ladies and seven gentlemen present. It was agreed to make a levy to pay off arrears, and try during the next session to convert more of the Dunedin public to their way of thinking.
