The body of a woman, about 30 years A age was found in the harbour at Thorndon this morning. She has not yet been identified. Fourth and Fifth Contingents. Dunedin, July 4. A meeting called by the Mayor was held this afternoon to give a reception to the Fourth and Fifth Contingents. In reply to a query by the Mayor the Premier telegraphed that the latest news was that the Tagus had sailed for Port Chalmers. He was communicating with the Imperial authorities and said he expected them to keep the arrangement in regard to the Bluff. A committee was appointed to carry out the details of the reception on the assumption that the men will come by way of Bluff and Invercargill. The Duke Praises the Police. Wellington, July 4.
The Commissioner of Police has received from the Minister for Justice, a letter sent by the Governor in which His Excellency states that he has been commanded by the Duke of Cornwall to convey to the Minister his appreciation of the police service during his visit to New Zealand. His Royal Higbnes3 says the police service throughout the colony was most satisfactory isnd was performed with conspicuous tact and judgment. The Returned Troopers.] Wellington, This Day. The Defence Department has now completed its records regarding the returned troopers, and is settling all arrears in pay and issuing discharges. All medals issued without an inscription of names are to be ongravod when requested. Auckland Fire Inquest. Auckland, This Day. At the inquest several employees of the Grand Hotel deposed that they did not recollect seeing any three as described by Jessie Minns on the premises before the fire.
