NEW ZEALAND’S NEW POSESSIONS.

Auckland, July 2. Lieut-Cpl. Gudgeon, British Resident at Raratonga, leaves hero to-morrow for his Island. 'He states that arrangements have been made by the Government for Mr S. Percy Smith (ex-Survoy-Goneral) to go to the South Seas in the new Go vernment oil-screw schooner Countess of Ranturly, in order to initiate a new system of government under the British flag on the recently annexed island of Niue (Savage Islands). Government will bo conducted by natives under a Resident Agent. Mr Smith will stay on Niue for about three months and will have an opportunity there of pursuing his Polynesian researches. The Countess of Ranfurly is expected to sail from hero for Raratonga and other islands of the Cook group and Niue in about three weeks’ time and will make regular trips to Niue.
