THE CHRISTCHURCH SEAT.

Why Mr Lewis Resigned.

(Special to “Star.”)

Christchurch, This Day.

A near relative of Mr Bollestou informs me that it is extremely unlikely that he will be a candidate for the present vacancy.

Mr Charles Lewis wires to tbe papers explaining the cause of his resignation. He never desired to enter Parliament, for the reason that his family history was one of a nature to render it extremely improbable that he could stand the physical strain. In his own words, the first four sessions left him weak and miserable, while the fifth "knocked him out.” But the apathy of his friends contributed largely to his decision. He thus concludes his letter: "Under all the circumstances, am I under any obligation to remain in politics at tbe bidding and on behalf of those who refuse to leave their firesides on one night in the year ? My answer is known. Its propriety will be most hotly disputed by those who are most responsible for it.” The Trades and Labour Council will ballot for a candidate for the Christchurch scat from among Messrs G. Taylor, Newton, and Fisher.
