At a meeting of the employers at the Petone railway workshops, a resolution was carried expressing gratification at the conferment of knighthood on Ward. Dunedin, June 25. ’ “Dr Coughtry has applied for a new trial in connection with the Evening Star libel on grounds that the verdict of the jury was against the weight of evidence, and - part perverse, and so defendant failed to prove any facts on which the article was based, the only question for the jury was the amount of damages the plaintiff was entitled to recover. Told the Truth. Mastebton, June 26. *At the Distriet Court, Emily Began, of Fetherstou, was acquitted on a charge, of perjury. Cost of Royal Visit. Auckland This Day. At a meeting of the executive of the Auckland receptions committee the secreary reported that the cost was £2135 of which the City Councils third was £7ll. If this were paid it would leave a balance of £257. It was decked tp leave the consideration of the disposal of the surplus untill after the final of the adjustment of accounts. An Admiral’s House. At a meeting of the Harbor Board, Admiral Beaumont wrote decljnin g to lay the foundation stone of Admiralty House. He believed the Admiralty would not approve of his inference, believing that the Admiralty believes the officer in command of the squadron should remain aboard their ship, when in port. In spite oi this, the tender of Jenkins for '£4295 was accepted for the construction of the House. Royal Momepto.
