GOLD MINING NEWS.

The mine manager at New Scotia reports ; —During the past week the contractors have driven No 1 level north 22 feet, total distance 113 feet. For the greater portion of the week the ground was much harder than usual; it is now composed chiefly of slate carrying broken stone with water percolating through it freely. The Gallant tunnel has been cleaned out and road re-graded for 54 feet tor the week, total on line of reef 198 feet. Bepairs are now complete as far as the winze to the surface leaving 100 more to complete the whole ot this level. The reprentatives of Messrs Cutten Bros., who recently acquired a prospect ting license on the Nile river, have engaged a party of men for prospecting operations. They commenced their labours last week.

The mine manager of the Alpine Extended reports :—From Monday, the 10th inat., the contractors in No. 7 level have driven 17 feet. There is no material change since last report. From Wednesday, 19th inst., two men have been rising on the reef in No. 7.

The Golden Blocks mine at Taitapu (West Wanganui) has cleaned up for a return of 2250zs of gold from 230 tons of stone, the result of 28 days’ crushing. The machinery is now being replaced on the Old Diggings Company’s dredge, under the supervision of Mr George Black, and it is expected she will start dredging in about three weeks’ time.
