Balfour in addressing the Conservative Agents at Holborn Restaurant said that Bannerman’s assertion was conducted barbarously, and was a scandalous and shocking statement. Several indignation meetings were held outside Queen’s Hall, and resolution condemning the pro Boer campaign were enthusiastically carried. It was resolved to support the Government. De Wot and Steyn recently made unsuccessful attempts to cross the railway line at Standerton and Heidelberg.
Lord Roberts pardoned several volunteers sentenced to servitude for sleeping at their posts. Commandant Barraud Tenter had arranged with his commando of a hundred to surrender, but one of his men informed General Badenhans, who imprisoned Venter. Two sons, however, escaped to the British lines at Merino. Received this day, at 10 16 a.m. London, June 20.
Colenbrander’s scouts are clearing the northeast Transvaal. Many prisoners are surrendering. The wagons and Boers are trying to break through the cordons and join Beyer’s force.
