A FAREWELL SOCIAL.

A farewell social took place last Tuesday in the Club Room of Mr T, D. Thomas’s Hotel at Blackball to Mr Ben Rhodes and his family, being on the eve of their departure for the Home Country. The whole town regret losing such a worthy citizen, and the majority rolled up to wish him a speedy return. Although pressed for room, the genial host provided a supper dainty and bountiful.

The chairman, Mr Leitch, with the assistance of the vice-chairman, Mr Haseldean, opened the proceedings. The following was the programme: —Toast, “ The King," was proposed by the chairman ; toast, “Mr Rhodes and family,” vice-chairman —responded to by Mr Rhodes. Presentation to Mr Rhodes was then made by the Union Association, several members of which spoke of their great respect and now presented mementos to Mr Rhodes. One was an exceedingly handsome merschaum pipe suitably engraved. Mr Rhodes, visibly overcome, thanked bis fellow workers.
