OUR KUMARA LETTER.
(OUB OWN CORRESPONDENT.)
Kumaea, This Day. Not a little indignation is felt in Kumara at the treatment of the Cadets on their way to Christchurch, It i 3 thought that more care should have been taken
when the welfare of so many children was concerned. A couple of hours standing in the drenching rain is at the best of times not a very pleasant experience, but does it not seem a little bit strange to complain of a couple of hours rain ? when the same boys had just experienced very nearly three months of an almost continuous downpour on tho Coast. It is soldierly anyway. Those of the boys who went away without uniforms are to be provided with a cap and jersey by Government to complete the outfit. The Eev. E. Whitehouse, in charge of the local contingent, proposes with the consent of their parents to supply the boys with niokerbockers at a cost of about 6s. This course will obviate the incongruity of our little contingent appoaring in ordinary dress.
I learn that Mr A Black, contractor for the Teremakau pontoon, has received instructions to lower them down to the end of the ways, there to wait a fresh when it is expected they will be floated. The work of lowering will begin as soon as the weather moderates. The weather is not calculated to assist those of our old folk who are suffering from ill health. I regret being unable to report any improvement in the condition of Mr Peter Dungan M.C.C., who has been confined in our local hospital for some months past. Indeed he has grown so weak of late, that little hope is enter- ] tained of his ultimate recovery. I
There is quite a remarkable case in our local Hospital in the person of a young lady (Miss Honeywill) who has undergone some 26 operations in different parts of the colony under various medical gentlemen. Under the care of Dr Scott, the sufferer is making good progress and every hope is entertained of her early recovery The meeting of the Hospital Trustess called for last night to consider tenders for supppes foa the ensuing twelve months lapsed for warn Jof a quorum. The meeting will be called for Tuesday next.
