THE JANE DOUGLAS.

The s. s. Jane Douglas, which arrived! safe in Hokitika yesterday morning, had. rather a rough time during her trip. The steamer left Hokitika on Thursday, 30th May, having on board. Bishop Grimes, Dean Foley, and the Rev. Fathers Le Petit and Malone. The party arrived at Bruce Bay on the following day, but the weather was too rough to land stores and the Jane Douglas anchored in the bay till the 2nd June when there being every appearance of a heavy storm Captain Coulson steamed out of the bay and took shelter under Open Bay Island. The weather was very bad and the vessel remained at anchor for two days, and steered for Okuru, but tlie tide not answering she stook on to Jackson's where Bishop Grimes and his party landed on the 6th June, when the Bishop celebrated Mass. After unloading the steamer returned to Okura, where she got stuck in the sand which had silted up. However after much perseverance she was floated. After landing; stores at Paringa, the Jane Douglas steamed to Bruce Bay. On Sunday Captain Coulson left on his return trip* and. reached Hokitika as before started. Altogether the weather was very bad, but the stout little steamer behaved splendidly. The wind was blowing from the north-east, with heavy seas, accompanied by much rain and thunder and lighting.
