Fire at Auckland. Auckland, June 16. A fire broke out about 11 o’clock on Saturday night in a wooden building known as the Plague Contract Hospital. It was being used at the time as quarters for some country mounted Corps in town in connection with the Eoyal visit. By the time the fire brigade arrived, the flames had a strong hold, and in view of the fact that the fire was half a mile from the nearest station, nothing could be done to save the building. No one was injured. The building belonged to the City Council and was insured in the South British for £3OO. Teachers’ Salaries Commission. Napiek, June 14. The Teachers Salaries Commission closed its sittings this evening and the members leave by express to-morrow. The general trend of the evidence taken here has been in favour of a national scale of payment of teachers, but is opposed to the scale at present submitted. Wellington Weather. The weather unfortunately broke yesterday morning and there were heavy showers during the day and last night. The total rainfall for the 24 hours is 0’95 at present. The Royal squadron passed Gisborne at two this morning. The vessels turned their flash lights on the town. An attempt was made te communicate with the Ophir by wireless telegraphy. The instrument was visibly agitated, but no definite record was taken, the apparatus apparantly not being quite id tune. Several messages were sent, and it is thought that it is probable the instrument on the Ophir, being more sensitive, they would be clearly recorded. A Burning Accident. Fielding, This Day. A four year old son of Crossby, of Awahuai Road, was seriously burnt by his clothes catching fire. It is unexpected that he will recover. Drowned. Auckland, This Day, Marquis Williamson, aged 19, son of Isaac Williamson owner of the Te Kumi Awanui river punt, fell overboard and was drowned. Serious Accident at Hawera. Hawbea, This Day. “A serious accident happened this morning. A horse, ridden by a boy named Peter Grant, bolted, and T. T. Miller, Manager of the Bank of Australasia, stopped the runaway, but both himself and boy sustained bad injuries. The boy was hurt about the head, but not dangerously. Miller had his pelvis splintered, shoulder hurt, and sustained severe scalp wounds, but it is not known whether he is injured internally.

Supreme Court Sitting. Invercargill. June 17, H. A- Atknison aged 20 who pleaded guilty of falsely swearing that he had sent two rings by post, was fined £lO. The Judge said the caso was not one which the probation Act would apply. Devonport ferry Company. Auckland, This Day. At the annual meeting of the Devonport Ferry Company, the balance-sheet showed a profit of £5748. A dividend at the rate of 10 per cent was authorised. Divorce. Wellington, This Day. In the Divorce Court a decree nisi was granted in the caso of Kate Border v. Henry Border.

Obituary. New Plymouth, This Day. James Bellringer, one of the best known public men in Taranaki died this morning through heart failure.
