THE JANE DOUGLAS.

Considerable uneasiness (says the West Coast Times) was caused in town on Saturday afternoon by the dissemination of a rather vague account of an upturned boat being seen off the beach, and its appearance connection with the Jane Douglas. Since the steamer left Hokitika last Thursday fortnight for the South there has been no direct news of her whereabouts, but it was generally regarded that she was either weather bound at Okaru or under shelter under some island. In reply to a telegrem Mr Sheath, postmoster at Hokitika, received the following from the postmaster at Okarito—«Mr Bmpson just arrived from South, Jane Douglas was quite safe at Okura last Monday, was aground at the landing in the river and waiting for the tide to rise : had landed at no place but Jackson’s Bay, was eight days getting there: arrived there Wednesday Sth; got to Okura next day.” From the above message it will be seen that the little steamer was quite safe a week ago. Bhe had to ship a number of sheep, and call at Bruce Bay on her return passage, and taking uncertain weather and other causes into consideration, there is no reason to doubt that Oapt Coulson, with his careful seamanship, will bring his boat back without mishap in dne course—probably by tonight. The latest report of the Jane Douglas received by the postmaster at Hokitika was to the eftoct that she passed Okarito at 5 p m yesterday bound north.
