CHARLESTON ALLEGED LIBEL CASES.

In Saturday’s issue of tlie Charleston Herald the Editor, who appeared before the District Court yesterday to answer a charge of libel, thus humorously, refers to his possible departure to another sphere : “The Charleston criminal libel case comes off at the District Court at Westport on Monday next, and before the editor of this degenerate rag again graces the editorial den with his presence, he will, if fate is placed in the hands of the prosecutors, have undergone such pleasures as Byron depicts in his “Prisoner of Chillon.” His doom is sealed, according to the decree of the mob, and as the g rim forebodings of the possible realisation of their heartfelt wish, enters our mind, we must perforce, take down the office lute and indulge in soul-stirring melody

It may be for years, and it may be for ever, etc.

In taking an imaginary farewell of the dingy old anotum, with its cob-webbed windows, through which we were wont to gaze at the snow clad mountains in the distance or a dog fight in Rotten Row, our .eyes are bedimmed with tears ; wo try to smile—a weary, sickly smile is the result. We gaze on the old shamrock coloured paste-pot, the ink-besmirched walls, the old chair in the corner gmo beyond repair, and a vague feeling of terror creeps over us at the thought of being rudely torn away from these cherished associations of a merry pa*t. And after the trouble went to in trimmming up our fingertips to grease the hand of the dear old Duke! It knocks us clean fiat, so we’ll “Say Au Re voir, but not Good-bye.”
