TEACHERS’ SALARIES COMMISSION.
[pee press association.] New Plymouth, June 8. The Teachers’ Salaries Commission concluded its sitting here <o-day. The principal evidence was that of Mr E. G. Allsw'orth, member of the Education Board who, while agreeing with the colonial expenditure strongly favoured teachers and inspectors being under the control of the Department and advocated provision being made for locally training pupil teachers. Confining the scope of the Commission of enquiry to salaries was merely scratching the surface of the question. Interlapping of districts required readjusting especially in view of higher education. He complimented Mr Hogben on the scheme for the latter. The present High Schools mostly were a farce, they competed with primary schools He suggested a central Council of Education to assist the Department composed partly of elected and nominated members, replacing the present Boards by larger by larger ones to not as buffers between tho Department and people.
