THE CORONATION OATH.
It is well, to note that, while by his coronation oath the King renounces the Pope of Rome in the most forcible, not to say offensive, terms, the highest military honours are officially paid to the Roman Church in Malta. A correspondent in the island tells me (writes Mr. Labouchere in Truth) that whenever the Roman Catholic Archbishop passes Goverement Housd at Malta, the main guard turns out toMiim under garrison orders, and, what is more, gives him a General’s salute. Why, if the Ring, the head of the army repudiates the Church of Rome as the mother of vile and damnable aercsies, the rest of the army should be required to salute a Catholic Archbishop with the same honours as a general, is hot easy to understand. If the one practice is observed, the other ought to be dropped. Of the two, I think that the honours paid to the Archbishop are better worth preserving ; but if. both were dropped, nobody would be much the worse.
