The Director of the Geological Sunny of Canada, in his last report, makes the amazing statement that practically not iingis known of one-third of the dominion. According to the report of the United

States Consul at Stratford, it is shown that more than a million and a quarter miles af territory are yet unexplored. This includes the inhospitablo detached Arctic portlou?, but aside from these fully 984,000 square miles are, for practical purposes, entirely unknown. The easterly area contains a greater extent of unexplored territoty. It comprises almost the cntito extent of Labrador Peninsula. The indications are that, during the uoxt five years, at least 5000 miles of now railroad will be buik throughout the Dominion, most of which will rnu through the unexplored wilderness, as it is recognised that railroads aro necessary to the opening up of this vast territory. The mineral wealth is said to be undoubtedly immense, while the dense forests of hardwood arc expected to boc:m3 a source of large profit;.
