MONO-RAIL EXPRESS TRAIN.
A cable was published in the Star on May Bth, stating that “a committee of the House of Lords has approved of running a mono-rail express train between Manchester and Liverpool.” Further particulars show that the electric monorail system is the invention of Mr F. B. Behr, A.1.C.F., and was exhibited in operation at the Brussels Exhibition of 1897. The Bill applying it to the Liver-pool-Manchestet Railway, when before Parliament last year, provided for the carriage of passengers only. The cars were to be supported on a single rail placed on steel trestles about 4fc high, with guide rails lower down to steady the car. The electric motors were to be carried on the lower part of the car. The promoters proposed to run at the rate of 110 miles an hour, covering the distance between the two cities in twenty minutes, and it was hoped to dispatch cars every ten minutes. The Committeee of the House of Commons, however, threw out the Bill, its Chairman (Sir John Kennaway expressing doubts as to the sufficiency of tho brake-power, and commenting on the interference with local interests. The committee was, he said, of opinion that in all schemes put forward to giving further railway access to the heart of the great cities the question of underground approach ought to be considered and adopted where practicable.
