Greymouth Evening Star, AND BRUNNERTON ADVOCATE. TUESDAY, MAY 28, 1901. THE WALLSEND MINE.

Whatever may be the report of the Coal Commission upon the Wallsend Coal Mine, no one will deny after reading the report of last night's meeting at Brunner, which appears in another column that the speakers have made out a good case. There was the testimony of miners who had worked in the mine,*including that of the Mayor e? Brunner. Of course we will be told that these men are interested parties and their statements must to soma extent be biased. But what there can be urged against the statements of Messrs Harrison, Alexander and Bishop, all former mine managers, but now uninterested in Brunner coal mines. These gentlemen all declare there is a vast coal deposit in sight, taken in conjunction with the evidence of coal miners who had worked in the mine must be accepted as more reliable than the testimony of those who have declared the mine is worked out. The real fact of the matter appears to be that when the Wallsend mine was shut down coal was a drug in the market and there were too many mines for the consumption, Now, that exactly the reverse is tho case, it is high time the mine was again reopened, and tho residents of Brunner should not allow the matter to stop with last night's meeting, but keep up the agitation ti 1 success crown their efforts.
