OUR KUMARA LETTER.

(ode own ooeeespondent.)

The break down of the steam fire engine at the late fire in Greymouth has had at least one good effect. Our local brigade in common with others on the Coast are having their apparatus looked to, and examined so as to bo ready should occasion require.

Victoria Day was kept a close holiday all the business places being closed. The town as a consequence wore a deserted appearance. Notwithstanding tho unfavorable outlook, a number of holiday makers loft town in the morning for Groymouth, Hokitika, and several for Ross, where a social and dance was to be given in honour of the returned troopers. Even with tho additional price now being given for silverpine sleepers, bushmen complain that there is nothing near tho wages to bo made now as heretofore owing to the growing scarcity of the timber.

Next Thursday the first of a series of lectures on Ambulance work by Dr Scott, will be given in tho Town Hall at 8 p m. It is unnecessary to say anything advocacy of the advantages of a

knowledge of first aid. They must bo evident to all. The lectures will be Jiren uu the auspices of the Kumara literary and Debating Society. A charge of 1/- will bo made to all whether members of the- Club or not. This goes to the Hospital. Intending members should notify the secretary, Mr MTlraith, or any member of the committee appointed for the purpose of securing members. I might mention that the lectures are open Ito anyone complying with the rules and these arc simple.
