Westport This Day.

The West Coast band contest opened to-day. The weather is wet, but there was a good attendance at the hall in the

evening. The results >vere: —Baritones — M. Bevan (Westport) 36; W. Garth (Greymouth) 35. Euphonium—M. Bevan (Westport) 36; W. Garth (Greymouth) 35. Tenor Homs—W. Taylor (Westport) 37 ; T. Elliott (Denniston) 36. B. Flat Cornets —J. Richards (Westport) 39; J. Goodall (Greymouth) 38.

Sopranos—Y. Robinson (Greymouth) 32 ; L. Neighbours (Denniston) 81.

Clarionets —T. M'Neight (Westport) 35; W. Wring (Greymouth) 34. May 24. The West Coast band contest continued to-day:—In the morning solo competitions were taken and resulted as follows:—

Slide Trombone—J. White (Blackspoint) 34 ; G. Goodall (Greymouth) 31. E. Flat Bases—A. Lockey (Westport) 39; G. M.'Donald (Westport) 38. The quickstep competition took place in the afternoon in showery weather and resulted : —Westport, 84$ ; Denniston, 83. Despite the rain a large number of people were interested in the latter competition. In the evening the Victoria Theatre was crowded in every part when the quartette over the' test pieces were played. Denniston won the first with 46 points* ’Westport second with 42. The test piece resulted in a tie, Denniston and-Westport each scoring 75 points.
