Iron Workers’ Strike

Sydney, May 24,

A Conference representative for the Iron Workers’ Union and Masters relative to the strike at Wort’s dock, failed to arrive at a decision. The men demand seven shillings a day, no non-unionist to be employed. It is feared the strike will spread.

Increase in Seamen’s Wages.

IyiBLBOURNE, May 94,

A Conference of Shipowners’ and Seamens’ Union have agreed to raise the wages of seamen, firemen and trimmers to £7 per month from July Ist. It is also practically agreed to adopt what is known as the New Zealand slip. Commonwealth Parliament,

Melboune, May 23. The debate on the Address-in-Reply is proceeding. Various speakers criticised the proposed Westralian railway, which caused Sir John Forrest to threaten what would happen if his State did not get railways. Two notices of motion were given asking the Premier whether his attention had been drawn to the threat of bis colleague to break up the Union if the railway wasnot constructed.

A Sensational Adventure. Sydney, May 24,

A trader named M’Donald, was blown away from an island while journeying to Vila in the New Hebridies, and reached Santos 400 miles away, after buffeting 10 days’ in a whale boat. Terrible Accident at Broken Hill.

A terrible accident occurred at the Broken Hill South mine. Six men working in the 500 feet level were killed by a fall of ore, and two others had a narrow escape.

The names of those killed are Prideaux, Downes, Mason, Bennetta, Havelock and Edwards. All are married. Two of the bodies are recovered.
