At the Supreme Court, oviue..Jc t Aubury for rape was very clear. The judge said with v. view of preventing this class of offence he must inflict a severe punishment, the prisoner being sentenced to ten years and twe floggings of twentyfive lashes. On hearing the sentence, the prisoner abused the judge and struggled savagely while being removed to the cell.
Henry Johnston, ex-managei of the Kauri Timber Company, pleaded guilty to charges of intend to defraud and was remanded for sentence.
Hugh Madden, aged 60, pleaded guilty to an indecent assault on a girl five years old, and was sentenced to ten years with hard labor. He was spared from flogging owing to his age. Abram Osman, a Turk, was charged with being a prohibited immigrant who did land in the colony. He was remanded iintil the ship sails in a month hence, when he will be put on board..
