Postal Revenue. Melbourne, May 17.
Mr Mulock states that sineb the introduction of the penny postage in Canads .he postal revenue has laigsly increased and by £50,000 a year more than under the higher rate. For many years th> postal expenditure was annually £150,000 more than the revenue; but it is expected chat the present year will show a shortage of only £50,000.
Concerning the Philippines
Sydney, May 17
An Australian, wri ing from the Philippines, warns Australia against going there is there is no way at present by which hoy can become American citizens. The tales of rich gold deposits are tales only. Nothing payable has been found, and there is very little prospect of employment, The salaries are low and the cosof living and rents are high, while the native population is an undesirable class. Returned Troops. Some returned soldiers arrived by the Salamis, including Captain Sir Stewart Richardson, Scrgt Arnott,Trooper Carroll (New Zealanders). Railway Accident. Another railway accident occurred at Wyong. An empty stock train and two engines by an oversight ran into a siding instead of the main line. The foremost engine jumped the buffer ends and rolled on the embankment. She is badly smashed. The driver and fireman are slightly injured. The other engine and some trucks arc damaged.
