THE CARDIFF COAL MINE.
(PER PRESS ASSOCIATION.)
Wellington, May 15
With reference to a telegram from Greymouth that an attempt was to be made to extinguish the fire in the Westport and Cardiff Coal Mine by cutting round the seat of fire and flooding by •water, the Mines' Department know nothing of the matter.
The lire is confined to a very small area at an outcrop, which is beyond reach of all available water; moreover, tbe Department officials assert that to no good purpose could it be served by the adoption of euch methods as given currency to in the telegram, nor would the Mines' Department be justified in occuring tho expense and risk to human life, which such work of necessity would involve.
