The Use of the Knife

Wellington, This Day,
Thomas Brown, a seaman belonging to the American steamer Bechura, was arrested on charge of stabbing Harry Barton a barman. The latter alleges that Brown attempted to snatch a battle of beer from him, and failing in this drew a knife and stabbed him on the shoulder. On the other hand Brown alleges that ho was returning to his ship when ho was sot upon by some men who demanded bis money. One of the men hit him in the face and knocked him down. He thereupon drew his knife in self-defence and used it on his nearest assailant. Brown is regarded by his shipmates as an unoffsnsive man. Barton has been removed to the hospital. The wounds arc not serious.
