FIRING ON THEIR FRIENDS.

One of the Duke of Westminster's campaign stories is not had—or badly "found." A captain of Yeomanry rode into Pretoria early one morning with his detachment, and reported a stiff engagement during the night with a largely superior force of Boers. Finally, the enemy, who suffered heavily, but carried off their dead and wounded, were put to flight. There were no British casualties.

A couple of hours later A captain of regulars rode in. He, too. had oddly enough been engaged all night in a precisely similar conflict with a still larger force of the enemy, who suffered heavily. but carried off their dead and wounded ; no British casualties, luckily. Somehow enquiries were made, and at las! the precise scene of the bloody engagement was identified. Strange to say, all he cartridge cases found were of he LecMctford pattern. The Ycomamy and the regulars had simply been blazing away at each other all night.
