Our Returning Soldiers,
Dunedin, This Day.
The Tongariro was berthed at Port Chalmers at eight o’clock. The weather is fine but dull for the reception. A close holiday is being observed. Very few took advantage of the marine excursion, the late boisterous weather and early start forming obstacles. Congratulations. The Premier has received a reply from Peacock of Melbourne, acknowledging his congratulations on the State celebrations which were a great success, and adds “very pleased to welcome New Zealand troops, and to bo able to give them a good position in the procession. Census Returns. Auckland, This Day. The total population returns at Auckland province are 148,269, being an increase of 22,257. Supreme Court. Wellington, This Day, The Chief Justice, at the Supremo Court, sentenced Ngahini Matu to three years’ imprisonment for breaking and entering ; and John Griggs, for rape, to ten years. Presentation to a Mayor. Napier, This Day. After the installation of M‘Vay as the Mayor to-day, Swan, the retiring Mayor, was presented by the corporation and staff with two valuable pieces of plate. Committed for Trial Auckland, This Day. Walter Lock was committed for trial for the theft of £220 from the Bank of New Zealand by the alteration of a cheque. The defence was that he was that ho was not the man who drew the money. The Returning Troops. Dunedin, This Day. The Troops reached Dunedin shortly before ono o'clock. Tremendous crowds were on the wharves for the cordial reception. Addresses were presented to Major Robin signed by 100 officers in the Dunedin district. Unfortunately heavy rain began to fall just as the procession was being formed; it will greatly interfere with the success of the proceedings.
