OUR KUMARA LETTER.
[OUE OWN CORRESPONDENT.]
The yield of 30 ozs 4 dwfcs from the Greenstone Junction dredgo for four weeks is c nsidered highly satisfactory in view of the fact that bottom Ims not been touched yet. This is not to say that the dredge will not be able to bottom. Up to Saturday evening the depth reached was about 24 feet, and that only for a few hours. There is therefore a margin of 11 feet or 12 feet yet to sink before the extreme depth the ladder is capable of reaching has been touched, and it is confidently expected that before that limit is reached bottom will be found with a substantial improvement in returns. The rumour that has gained currency to the effect that most of the above return was «ot during the last day or two is altogether misleading. The return is given for four weeks, and was so stated in the notice posted on the company's office on Saturday. What was got on any particular day is mere matter of conjecture, and reports like the above are likely to have a very damaging effect in leading the public to expect sensational results where they should not be looked for.
I regret to lmve to record the death of Mr John Hayes which took place at th e Grey Eiver hospital on Saturday nigl /fc. Deceased had been suffering for so me considerable time from a painful dis< -use of the throat, and his end was not v jiexpected. He was very widely know n on the Coast and highly respected esp-jcially in this district where he had been a resident for a number of years rjamediately preceeding his entry into the hospital. Deceased was a native of County Tipperary, Ireland and 49 years of age.
